Dakar, Oct 2 (APS) – The parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the physical attack suffered on Sunday in Lomé, Togo, by one of its members, the Senegalese deputy Guy Marius Sagna, we learned on Wednesday from an official source.

”The ECOWAS Parliament condemns this act of violence and wishes a speedy recovery to MP Guy Marius Sagna and all the others injured,”’ declared the sub-regional parliamentary institution, in a press release sent to APS .

On Sunday, Guy Marius Sagna was the victim of an attack while he participated in an activity of the “Dynamic for the Majority of the People” (DMP), a Togolese opposition platform.

”The Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) learned with regret of the physical attack of which the honorable Member Guy Marius Sagna was the victim, on Sunday September 29, 2024 in Lomé (Togo ), while he participated in an unauthorized meeting of a collective of Togolese opposition parties and civil society organizations, on the sidelines of the 3rd extraordinary session of Parliament in which he was taking part,” he lamented.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed the MP for the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) lying on a bed with one of his hands wrapped in a bandage.

In another video, Guy Marius Sagna is seated in a wheelchair, alongside a woman and a man standing, presumably members of the opposition in Togo.

The Senegalese MP, an ECOWAS parliamentarian, was attacked when the political meeting in which he was participating was violently interrupted by individuals without the police intervening.

On Monday, the Senegalese Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs “firmly condemned the unspeakable attack” of which the Senegalese MP Guy Marius Sagna was the victim and called for “the opening of an investigation to determine responsibilities” .

In its press release, ”the ECOWAS Parliament reassures the public that it is carefully following the arrangements made by the Togolese authorities for the security of the MP as well as other necessary measures in such circumstances”.
