The policy of barrageslaunched by fire S.M. Hassan II and continued by HM le Roi Mohammed VIallowed the Morocco to become a model in terms of mobilization and management of water resourcesunderlines the Ministry of Equipment and Waternoting that this strategy ensured a continuous supply of water despite the effects of climate change.

According to the data presented on the “Maadialna” platform, the Morocco strengthened its water supply thanks to the construction of large barrages and facilities for water transport potablewhile adopting a proactive approach and integrated resource management. The storage capacity of the dams allowed the irrigation of hundreds of thousands of hectares and the satisfaction of the water needs of the population.

Morocco’s water infrastructure in figures

  • 154 large dams with a total capacity of 20.7 billion cubic meters;
  • 148 small and medium sized dams ;
  • 15 seawater desalination plants with a current capacity of 192 million cubic meters, with a target of 1.7 billion cubic meters by 2030;
  • 17 facilities for water transfer surface and thousands of well et forages to exploit the groundwater.

These infrastructures have contributed to the protection of people and property against floods, the production of hydroelectric energy and the development of basins to prevent soil erosion.
