Beware of frost
Make no mistake, frost is possible and even probable in May in Quebec. Obviously, the timing of the last event depends on the sector. While an episode is possible during the night from Saturday to Sunday in the east of the province, the risk is not ruled out for southern Quebec around mid-May. The mercury can still drop below freezing even during this time. Why is this a threat? Mainly for plantations that may suffer damage.
Late frosts
Greater Montreal records the last frost on average around April 27. Elsewhere in the province, it’s much later: until June 4 in Gaspé. In recent years, Montreal has experienced an episode on May 12 in 2020. Among these dates, note the last demonstration on June 2 of the same year in Drummondville.
Favorable context
The cold remains present in spring in the Arctic. When a trough situation arises, this air can penetrate up to our latitudes. In fact, this scenario seems to be taking shape for mid-May in Quebec. The intensity of this flow should be monitored, but the risk of late frost should not be neglected. Even in the south of the province, it would be better to wait before planting certain plants.
