The 101st French department still does not see the end of the tunnel between the recently detected cases of cholera and the still very present insecurity. The situation remains catastrophic on site. Despite the implementation of the Wuambushu 2 plan on April 16, the security situation in Mayotte remains very tense. According to Liot MP from Mayotte, Estelle Youssouffa, the battle against gangs is still far from won.

“There are regular clashes because regaining ground in the face of violent gangs is not easy, even if there are dozens of arrests. So there is still a lot of exasperation and nervous fatigue from the share of the population,” she reports.

The risk of a cholera epidemic

Another failure of the Wuambushu 2 plan according to her, the management of migratory flows towards Mayotte. Boats from East Africa continue to arrive in droves, with a new problem to resolve in recent days. “We always have arrivals of kwassa-kwassa (small fishing boats, editor’s note) which are also loaded with cholera patients who disembark from the Comoros. And now there is a strain which has settled in Mayotte with dozens sick”, she worries.

A worrying situation because the only hospital in the department is already largely overloaded and completely devoid of staff. And in this health context considered worrying in Mayotte, the Minister for Health, Frédéric Valletoux, announced that he will visit the site on May 9 and 10.
