The 1is October 2024, Ottawa – The federal government is committed to supporting critical sectors of regional economies while providing skilled workers with a clear path to permanent residency.

The Honorable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today that the federal government has reached an agreement with the Government of Yukon to help temporary workers who play a crucial role in the economic development of the territory to subsequently become permanent residents.

This temporary measure will provide new work permits to up to 215 temporary workers designated and supported by the Government of Yukon. Thus, these workers will be able to continue to work while their application for permanent residence under the Yukon Nominee Program is processed. Eligible individuals must demonstrate that they meet the established criteria; if applicable, they are expected to obtain permanent residency in 2025 or 2026. These skilled workers accept key vacant positions in Yukon and actively contribute to Canada’s economy and social diversity.

To date, IRCC has worked with Alberta, Manitoba and Yukon to implement this measure. IRCC remains willing to explore options with all provinces and territories that would make it possible to grant permanent residence to a greater number of current temporary residents while meeting the needs of administrations in relation to the labor market.

IRCC will continue to work with provinces and territories to achieve our shared economic immigration goals.
