22 people, including two minors, were arrested and placed in police custody for damage and mortar fire, on the sidelines of the May 1, 2024 demonstration in Lyon. 10 of them will be brought before the Lyon public prosecutor’s office this Friday, May 3.

This May 1, 2024, during the traditional parade, incidents broke out at the head of the procession between black blocks and the police. The mortar fire of the first was responded to by tear gas from the targeted police forces.

Along the route of the demonstration, several establishments were damaged, including bank branches, street furniture and restaurant facades.

In total, 22 people (including two minors) were arrested and taken into police custody. Some suspects were arrested for throwing projectiles, others were equipping themselves before the demonstration or carrying sticks and spray paint during the parade.

This Friday, May 3, ten adults will be referred to the Lyon public prosecutor’s office, for immediate appearance for eight of them. Four people are being prosecuted for acts of violence against a person holding public authority and participation in a group with a view to committing an offense, four other people are being prosecuted for participating in a group with a view to committing an offense,

Two people will be referred according to the appearance procedure upon prior admission of guilt: one for damage to property intended for the public utility, and the other for rebellion.

One of the minors arrested for participating in a group with a view to committing an offense was summoned before the prosecutor’s delegate.

The investigations concerning the other minor arrested were carried out under the authority of the public prosecutor’s office with territorial jurisdiction due to the place of residence of this minor.

Finally, the other police custody measures gave rise to a continuation of the investigation or to a dismissal of the procedure at the end of the investigations which did not make it possible to sufficiently characterize the existence of an offense.
