Investigators from the Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) spent Thursday in Dolbeau-Mistassini, who are responsible for shedding light on a police operation by the Sûreté du Québec where a man, visibly in distress, was shot and injured by a police officer.

It appears that the individual pointed a weapon in the direction of the patrol officers before being hit by the projectile.
Wednesday evening, around 6:30 p.m., Sûreté du Québec police officers were called to intervene at Place Panoramique, in Dolbeau-Mistassini. The police received information that a man with suicidal thoughts was armed at his residence.
“He told me that he was separating, that things weren’t going well with his girlfriend,” says a neighbor.
SQ agents quickly arrived on site. A security perimeter is erected.

“I heard the sirens, I looked outside and there were several police officers, around ten around the house,” remembers the neighbor across the street.
“There were police lurking all around the house. It’s definitely scary, you don’t know where he is, on both sides,” said another member of the neighborhood.
The police managed to establish telephone contact with the individual. Yves Perron, who lives next door, witnessed the scene.
“At the chassis, I saw the individual going in circles, he was not happy. At one point he came out and we heard three shots: bang, bang, bang! “, he said.
Wounded by projectiles
The BEI reports that the individual pointed a weapon in the direction of the police. One of them fired.
The neighbor across the street explains. “I didn’t hear the guy shoot but I saw him on the ground. I saw that the police officers rushed to come and probably get a first aid kit from their car. After that he left in an ambulance,” he said.
According to our information, the man is in stable condition.
Ongoing investigations
The BEI has opened an investigation. Since Thursday morning, four investigators from the Bureau of Independent Investigations have been on site to shed light on the circumstances of the police intervention which involved agents of the Sûreté du Québec.
The Quebec City Police Department is also conducting a criminal investigation.
Several months will be necessary before the BEI can submit its report. Until then, anyone who may have witnessed the scene is asked to contact the Office of Independent Investigations.
