Extreme speeding: still steep fines every week

The rule concerning “excessive speeding”, in force since 1is April 2008, does not yet seem to have been understood by all motorists.

On September 27 and 28, a police officer from the MRC station of Maria-Chapdelaine, in Lac-Saint-Jean, recorded two drivers at fault on a speedometer.

The first motorist, a 28-year-old man, was captured on Chemin Résolu, in Dolbeau-Mistassini. He was then traveling at 137 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. He received a fine of $1,376, in addition to 14 demerit points.

The second, a 45-year-old man, was captured on Route 169, in Péribonka, while he was traveling at 153 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. He received a fine of $1,301, with also 14 demerit points.

Their driving licenses were suspended for a period of 7 days.

Since April 1, 2008, if you are found guilty of excessive speeding, this offense is taken into consideration for 10 years. This means that if you commit one or more other serious speeding offenses within 10 years of a conviction, you receive an even harsher penalty.

Extreme speeding is committed when the driver exceeds the permitted limit by 60 km/h or more in a zone where the limit is 100 km/h or more, or 50 km/h or more in a zone where the limit is from more than 60 km/h to 90 km/h.
