The famous Unspunnen stone resurfaces… on the front page of the Quotidien Jurassien. Since its theft on August 20, 2005, no one had seen it again, until the newspaper received in paper format and anonymously several photos showing the partially buried stone.

While it was claimed to be lost, crushed or even drowned at the bottom of Lake Thun, the Unspunnen stone was quite simply buried in Jura lands, explains Rémy Chételat, editor-in-chief of the Quotidien Jurassien, in Forum.

The newspaper has in fact received several photos of the partially buried stone and accompanied by an edition of the newspaper dating from August 26, 2024. Véronique Erard-Guenot’s investigation allows us to state with certainty that it is indeed the real Unspunnen stone.

A symbol of tensions between Bern and the Jura

The famous stone was first stolen in 1984 by Jura autonomists, then delivered in 2001at the Saignelégier Market Competition, before being stolen once again four years later.

It has become the symbol of the tensions between the cantons of Jura and Bern, tensions that the people rightly decided to bury through the ballot box on September 22 by accepting the Concordat on the transfer of Moutier.
