A Google Cloud data center in Paris was flooded. Cloud services are still heavily disrupted.
On its status page, Google indicates that no less than 90 applications are affected by the failure. The region affected is europe-west9, but Google does not rule out other regions in Europe being affected. On Tuesday evening, around 7 p.m., the cloud service provider first reported the issues. Work continues to bring all cloud services back online.
We now know that water damage in a data center in Paris is the cause of the massive outage. This caused a multi-cluster outage that forced Google to shut down the hardware to prevent further damage.
water and fire
It is not yet known how the water could have entered. It was a rainy day in Paris, but Google’s data centers should in principle be prepared for this eventuality. The Register reports that a fire allegedly took place first. The fact that the material came into contact with water during the extinguishing process seems to be the most plausible explanation at present.
At this time, Google cannot promise a date when all services will be restored. Customers directly or indirectly affected by this outage are advised to follow the status page.
Google Cloud also had good news this week. The cloud provider had its first profitable quarter. But the success was celebrated only briefly.
