In its 10 a.m. vigilance monitoring bulletin, Météo-France places the Marne department on orange thunderstorm alert from late afternoon until next night.

Current situation

New facts: the Marne is placed on orange alert for the “storms” parameter.

General situation: after a relatively calm day on Wednesday, a potentially intense stormy spell is expected between the end of the day on Wednesday and the beginning of the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

Notable observations: The episode has not started.

Qualification

Rainstorm situation requiring particular vigilance due to its intensity.

Expected development

This Wednesday afternoon, storms broke out in Burgundy. They then extend to Champagne in the evening and very early night from Wednesday to Thursday.

These storms could be accompanied by violent phenomena, particularly regarding the associated amounts of rain.

On this stormy episode we expect:

– heavy heavy rain: 15 to 30 mm in a short time, and up to 40 or 50 mm locally over the entire episode in a few hours;

– a risk of hail;

– strong gusts of wind: 70 to 90 km/h;

– numerous lightning strikes.

The risk of thunderstorms weakens significantly in the middle of the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

Possible consequences:

  • Violent storms likely to cause significant local damage, particularly to light housing and temporary installations.
  • Flooding of cellars and low points can occur very quickly.
  • Some fire outbreaks may be recorded in the forest following lightning strikes not accompanied by precipitation.

  • When a storm approaches, take the usual precautions to shelter objects sensitive to the wind.
  • Do not take shelter under trees.
  • Avoid walks in forests.
