On March 13, a road accident in the south of the country left seven people dead.

Thursday, April 25, in the early evening, a dramatic road accident involving a public transport bus occurred in Koungheul, in the Kaffrine region (south-center), according to the Senegalese press agency, which cites a secure Source.

The preliminary report shows 13 deaths and around 40 injured.

The authorities quickly intervened on the scene to help the victims.

Late in the evening, El Malick Ndiaye, the new Minister of Land and Air Transport, went to the scene of the accident.

After assessing the situation, he announced measures to reduce accidents. “ We will ensure that drivers do not clutter the dashboards of their vehicles with unnecessary items. A directive will be issued to this effect to facilitate the work of road controllers. “, declared Mr. Ndiaye, emphasizing the speed limit.

This accident comes more than a month after that which occurred in Sabodala, in the south of the country, which resulted in the death of seven people.

In January 2023, a collision between two buses in Kaffrine, in the center of the country, caused a heavy toll of 40 deaths and 87 injuries. In response, former president Macky Sall declared a three-day national mourning, followed by an interministerial council aimed at taking “firm” measures on road safety and public transport.

Barely a week later, a new tragedy struck the same region, with the collision of two vehicles, resulting in the death of 19 people.

In December 2023, the National Road Safety Agency (Anaser) recorded an average of 17,000 accidents per year in Senegal, representing 12 billion CFA francs in losses. According to Anaser, these figures place the country as one of the countries most affected by the trauma of road accidents with a death rate which amounts to 23.4% per 100,000 inhabitants per year.
