Bimbo Canada will soon close its Lévis factory, where around a hundred people work.
The closure of the Saint-Joseph Street bakery facilities is planned for the week of July 1, 2024, the company announced Monday afternoon. Usage and production had been in steady decline for some time, management said.
Production will be transferred to other bakeries, mainly in Quebec, according to the press release.
Bimbo explains that it wants to reduce all costs in its factories.
The company believes it can provide the same products and services to its customers.
Compensation
“Since 2014, the company has invested more than 500 million dollars in Canada, including 160 million in Quebec,” explains Marie-Ève Royer, president of Bimbo Canada since 2023.
The bakery employs around 95 workers. Affected employees will be eligible for severance benefits. They will be entitled to orientation services as well as external placement services.
Bimbo Canada is Canada’s largest bakery. Among its well-known brands, it notably owns Vachon, in Sainte-Marie, in Beauce.
Since 2014, Vachon has also belonged to the Mexican Grupo Bimbo.
