SENEGAL-UNIVERSITE-HYGIENE / UADB: an auxiliary civil protection commission proposed to address the situation of restaurants – Senegalese press agency

Bambey, April 24 (APS) – The commander of the departmental hygiene sub-brigade of Bambey (center), Warrant Officer Cheikh Amsatou Sarr, concerned by the issue of sanitation in the restaurants of the Alioune Diop University (UADB ), proposed setting up an auxiliary civil protection commission, to allow technical services to inquire about the situation of these establishments.

“Thousands of young people live at university. This is why we proposed to the authority to set up an auxiliary civil protection commission with all the technical services to identify the problems that the restaurants at the University of Alioune Diop are facing,” a- he declared, in an interview with journalists.

He indicated that a report was placed on the table of the prefect of Bambey before the start of the lessons. It is a question of providing solutions to the unsanitary conditions observed in the restaurants of this university, he clarified.

According to him, despite the disinfection carried out by the departmental hygiene service, the unsanitary conditions of the UADB restaurants are acute.

“Until now, he said, a buyer who is in charge of three university restaurants is still refusing medical examinations for his employees,” he lamented.

Refusal of medical visits for employees of 3 restaurants

The accused is “Mr. Mouhamed Goumbala who is in charge of the restaurants on campus A, C and ISFAR”, the Higher Institute of Agricultural and Rural Training, he said. He accuses him of refusing to “withdraw medical visits for more than a month”, so that he can be aware of the health situation of his employees.

The commander of the Bambey departmental hygiene sub-brigade announced that he had even submitted “a request for assistance” to the police to force the buyer to respect the specifications.

Warrant Officer Sarr says he is worried about the health of the students in view of the hygiene infractions committed by a third person to the great dismay of the students.

According to the sanitary engineering technician, a visit to the premises revealed the unsanitary conditions of the cold rooms, warehouses, restaurants and the lack of personal protective equipment, as well as the absence of adequate means of transporting meals. .

“Today, health data shows that after Ziguinchor, it is the Diourbel region which comes in second position in terms of tuberculosis […]”.

In the region, he said, “it is the department of Bambey which is most affected by this disease”, justifying “the urgency of monitoring the university where cases of tuberculosis are recorded”.

Risk of toxic infection

He warned that the unsanitary situation prevailing at the University of Bambey could cause food poisoning with its share of consequences on the health of students.

Mr. Sarr does not rule out serving a summons to cease operations to the buyer of the three restaurants to preserve the health of the students.

Contacted by the APS correspondent, Mouhamed Goumbala promised that his employees will carry out their medical examination at the end of April.

However, he refuted the comments of the commander of the departmental hygiene sub-brigade on the unsanitary conditions of restaurants, indicating that he had taken the necessary measures to guarantee quality service.

Concerning the lack of water observed at the UAD, the commander of the departmental hygiene sub-brigade of Bambey invites the university authorities and those in charge of SEN’EAU to smooth things over in the interest of all. He recalls that the use of water from the university’s mini-boreholes without the necessary control can cause health consequences.

Polluted wells

He recalled that the analysis carried out on the department’s wells last year showed that these water sources were polluted with fecal coliforms and total coliforms. This justifies the urgency of carrying out the analysis of the mini-drillings which supply the university.

According to him, poor water quality can cause water-borne illnesses, such as cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhea and even polio.

The head of the departmental hygiene service took the opportunity to invite the public authorities to strengthen the staff of the Bambey hygiene sub-brigade and provide it with a service vehicle to facilitate its interventions.

“Unfortunately, our department does not have a vehicle for our interventions. In case of emergency, I often call the district medical officer to ask him to lend us a car,” he explained.
