Since 2012, Julien Janvier has implemented actions which, over time, have enabled the Jules-Doitteau hospital in Villaines-la-Juhel (Mayenne) to become an LPO refuge. We have implemented several actions in order to move towards sustainable development,” explains Julien Janvier.

Shelter for insects, tall grass and wild flora

The aim is to highlight the protection of birds and the environment. This involves creating natural shelters for insects, areas of tall grass, planting wild flora, etc. But the issues are also social. This helps to improve the living environment of residents and strengthen social ties between them and with staff.

When we visited, elderly people were marveling at the swallows on the windowsills. They encourage the last juvenile to leave the nest so that it can migrate,” Julien Janvier explained to them. There used to be nests but when the roller shutters were closed, the nests were destroyed. The swallows worked in vain. We installed six artificial nests which were all occupied, complementing the two existing natural nests.

A pond and planned activities

The LPO (Bird Protection League) refuge label is just the beginning. The creation of a pond is being studied and the implementation of activities with residents is planned. The first activity will take place in November: an external speaker will come to present the local fauna and flora. I hope this project will encourage others, whether they emerge from staff or residents. We are professionals, residents but we live together in these premises,” concludes Cyrielle Vevres-Baranzini, the establishment’s deputy director.
