Alberta recorded a record increase of 202,324 new residents on 1er January 2024, bringing its total population to 4.8 million people, according to new Statistics Canada data released Wednesday.

This record population growth is due to the arrival of people from across Canada and around the world.

Alberta also broke a national record in 2023 for interprovincial migration by recording a net gain of 55,107 people.

This is the largest increase in interprovincial migration nationally since comparable data became available in 1972.

Most interprovincial migrants came from Ontario and British Columbia.

Statistics Canada estimates that 38,236 Ontarians moved to Alberta in 2023, compared to 14,860 Albertans who moved to Ontario. This represents a net gain of 23,376 people.

Similarly, an estimated 37,650 British Columbians moved to Alberta, compared to 22,400 Albertans who moved to that neighboring province, a net gain of 15,250 people.

In total, interprovincial migration accounted for 27% of Alberta’s population growth in 2023. It is narrowly ahead of permanent immigration (26%) and natural population increase (8%).

The most important component, however, is temporary international migration. Non-permanent residents from other countries accounted for 39% of population growth over the past year, reflecting a national trend.

According to Statistics Canada, the population of Canada was 40,769,890 inhabitants on 1er January, an increase of 3.2% compared to the previous year.

Without temporary immigration, that is, relying solely on permanent immigration and natural increase (births minus deaths), Canada’s population growth would have been almost three times lower (1.2% )underlines the federal agency.

Alberta’s population, meanwhile, increased 4.4% year over year. The province now represents 11.8% of the country’s population, the largest proportion ever recorded.
