Harry against the tabloids: the prince will not be present at the trial

Prince Harry continues his fight against the celebrity press in the United Kingdom. The prince, residing in California with his wife and their two children, is nevertheless expected to testify remotely for the opening of a trial this week.

However, Meghan Markle’s husband is expected to testify in person in court in February for this trial which begins on January 21 and is expected to last seven weeks. It targets News Group Newspapers (NGN), which the 40-year-old prince claims used unethical and illegal methods to gather information about him for many years.

In December, the Duke of Sussex explained that he wanted to speak at the trial because “I am the last person who can be held to account.” He also wants to get a conclusion to this case so that the hundreds of other people who were forced to settle the matter out of court can “turn the page.”

This is particularly the case of Hugh Grant, who reached an agreement last year because of his legal costs which would have amounted to around 10 million dollars, even if the judge ruled in his favor. The Notting Hill actor spoke on social media about this.

“As is often the case with completely innocent people, I have been offered a huge sum of money to keep this matter out of court. I don’t want to accept this amount or make a deal. I would like all the allegations they deny to be tested in court. But the rules governing civil proceedings mean that if I pursue the case with a trial and the court awards me damages, even one cent less than the settlement offer, I will have to pay the court costs of both parties.

Of the approximately 40 original plaintiffs suing NGN, Prince Harry is one of only two still fighting the case.
