A princess behind the creation of the Hôtel-Dieu

90 people participated, Friday evening, in the auditorium of L’Apostrophe, in the conference by Arlette Boué, retired professor of French and Latin and member of the Archaeological Society of Eure-et-Loir (Sael).

The teacher spoke of the trajectory of Princess Berthe (around 1013-1085), a character who marked her time. The granddaughter of Queen Berthe, daughter of the Count of and , Eudes II, and Ermengarde d’Auvergne, notably founded the Notre-Dame de Chartres almshouse, future Hôtel-Dieu.

The speaker developed her links with Chartres. In homage to her son, Duke of , she offered a beautiful ciborium to Chartres Cathedral. A widow, she became closer to her brother, Thibaud III, Count of Blois, Chartres and Châteaudun. It was at this time that she founded or restored, in 1070, the Aumône Notre-Dame de Chartres. »
