Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan is recovering from surgery after being stabbed at least six times by an intruder at his home in Mumbai, India, on January 16.
The incident took place when the 54-year-old actor confronted an unidentified man who entered his family home shortly after midnight.
“Saif Ali Khan is out of surgery and out of danger. He is currently recovering and doctors are monitoring his progress,” his team said in a statement. “We would like to thank doctors Niraj Uttamani, Nitin Dange, Leena Jain and the team at Lilavati Hospital. We thank all of his fans and supporters for their prayers and thoughts during this time.”
Dr. Dange also told reporters that the star “suffered a major injury to his thoracic spinal cord due to a knife lodged in his spine,” according to BBC News. “Surgery was undertaken to remove the knife and repair the spinal fluid leak. Two other deep wounds on his left hand and another on his neck were treated by the plastic surgery team,” it said.
Saif Ali Khan is married to another Bollywood star, Kareena Kapoor Khan, with whom he has two children. His team assured fans his family was safe after the incident, described as an “attempted burglary”. Dixit Gedam, deputy commissioner of police in Mumbai, told reporters that the case was being investigated and the attacker was being sought.
Saif Ali Khan, son of actress Sharmila Tagore and cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, made his Bollywood debut in the early 1990s. His films include the romantic comedies Dil Chahta Hai and Love Aaj Kal, the series Netflix The Lord of Bombay and the action films Tanhaji and Devara: Part 1.
