President-elect Donald Trump has thrown his support behind the 2028 Los Angeles Games leaders to stage “the biggest Games” in history, despite the challenges raised by the recent fires that hit the city.
Casey Wasserman, chairman of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, met with Trump on Wednesday at his Florida home in Mar-a-Lago, the news site reports Axios this Thursday.
“America’s Games”
“These are America’s Games,” Trump told Wasserman. They are more important than ever for LA and I will support you in every way possible to make them the greatest Games in history.
Los Angeles has been plagued by fires for ten days, which have killed at least 24 people and destroyed more than 12,000 buildings for damage estimated at tens of billions of dollars. The disaster sparked some criticism of the Californian megacity’s ability to stage the 2028 Olympics safely, although no competition sites were affected.
“I welcome President-elect Trump’s support for Los Angeles at the heart of our region’s destruction,” Casey Wasserman told Axios.
