With the new year, various innovations come into force on Swiss roads. Since January 1, new rules relating to road traffic noise apply. It is now explicitly prohibited to produce exhaust noise, including detonations, if this can be avoided. Any offense may be punished by the court with a fine of up to CHF 10,000. In addition, noise-related fines (for example, nuisance caused by an engine left running while stationary) increase from CHF 60 to CHF 80.
As in the European Union, Swiss motorcycles registered from January 1 are subject to European legislation relating to exhaust gases, called the Euro 5+ standard. At the same time, noise rules are tightened for first registrations.
Automated driving takes a big step forward
On March 1, automated driving will become possible on Swiss roads. For those who drive a car equipped with an authorized and activated autopilot for the highway, it will now be allowed to take their hands off the wheel and no longer constantly monitor traffic and the vehicle when driving on the highway. . However, you will need to prepare to regain control of the vehicle at the request of the system. However, vehicle types with the necessary automation system remain rare and no manufacturer has yet submitted an application for authorization in Switzerland (status as of mid-December 2024).
In addition, vehicles without a driver will be able to travel on officially authorized routes from March 1. Monitoring by an operator in a power station will nevertheless be essential. It will also become possible to park automatically, without driving, in car parks and in marked spaces reserved for this use.
The development of automotive assistance and automation systems is also changing the theoretical and practical driving tests for cars and motorcycles. From July 1, knowledge in this area will in fact be checked.
Also on this date the category of heavy electric motorcycles (with a total weight of up to 450 kg) will be created. It’s a response to the increasingly important place occupied by cargo bikes. This will also be taken into account when it comes to parking space signage.
Also abroad, the year 2025 will see the entry into force of various new legislation relating to road traffic and entry into the territory. The TCS offers an exhaustive summary on its website: https://www.tcs.ch/fr/camping-voyages/information-touristiques/news-actualites/news-2025.php
