Her first name recalls that of a famous French writer from Cuba, pioneer of erotic literature, Anaïs Nin. Dubbed with a sexy man’s voice, it also echoes the advertising spot for Cacharel’s first perfume in the 80s. One hundred percent cult. Friday November 3, 2023, Anaïs Emery began the 29th edition of GIFF, the Geneva International Film Festival, her 3rd as general and artistic director of the festival, immersed in screens in all their forms. In the media landscape for several years, she had cut her teeth by co-creating the NIFFF, the International Fantastic Film Festival, in 2000 in Neuchâtel, before taking over the reins of artistic direction in 2006.
Nomadic lifestyle
From festivals around the world to business trips, his job involves a nomadic lifestyle. Seasoned with the suitcase strategy combining glamor and marathon comfort from morning to evening, she loves traveling to escape her comfort zone and discover different cultures. Just once, let’s go beyond the traditional framework for a shared memory between Anaïs and I who write these lines: it’s impossible not to mention here the dress that I had custom-sewn for her for her very first Cannes Film Festival at the beginning of the 2000s. A great moment of emotion, punctuated by giggles that forged our friendship. Enchanted parenthesis!
Perched high
In the midst of preparing for the festival, she opens the doors of her apartment to us in Neuchâtel, where she lives with her 17-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son. At home, there are no luxury brands in sight, rather favorites for pieces that follow her on her wanderings. The image, rather its image in representation, is an integral part of Anaïs Emery’s work. Far from being a chore, shaping it is not one of his priorities either.
However, like certain famous figures recognizable in a stylistic gimmick, she has managed to create a look that defines her at first glance. “I like the look of heels,” she confesses while getting her makeup done. The questions that the heel raises are interesting, because it poses a bit of women’s history. Faced with this trend which sees the heel as being a tool of patriarchy, we can also perceive it as a tool for gaining self-confidence. We are taller in heels, I like to appropriate this object and its protective dimension.”
Never without its red
Her signature is red lipstick. More of a matte and garnet texture. “I like strong lipsticks, they allow you to distract the attention a little in certain situations,” she laughs. The little black jacket completes the trilogy of its graphic silhouette: “The black blazer adapts to all situations: no one notices it on public transport, while in meetings it gives presence and confidence. » For her, the little black jacket has variable geometry.
One day’s blazer can be replaced the next day with leather. “Leather is a bit rock’n’roll. I like the rebellious side of this aesthetic. I spent a lot of time in alternative circles and learned a lot of things there. I built myself through these subcultures. And then, leather is a protective material, it’s like armor, a second skin.”
The color of moods
On a daily basis, she matches her style to her mood. “Blue is my favorite color. For me, pink and blue correspond to a good mood. But above all I attach importance to materials, preferably a little fluid. I think a lot about my skin, I want materials that are pleasant to wear. I avoid things that irritate me, for example. I can make concessions on my shoes, but not on clothes. From a professional point of view, I have to think of an outfit in the morning that adapts to several situations during the day and evening, because I don’t go home to change.”
Over the years, Anaïs Emery has become aware of certain struggles at the societal level. If she dares more today, it is also in the name of her responsibility to take responsibility for herself as best as possible, in order to inspire other women to take full responsibility in their own lives.
His news
The third edition of GIFF, from November 3 to 12, 2023, under the direction of Anaïs Emery is in full swing. Festival-goers won’t miss the almost messianic arrival of Jean-Michel Jarre, pioneer of electronic music, who will present The Eye and I, the immersive work he created with digital artist Hsin-Chien Huang. She is particularly pleased with this year’s programming, which she believes has reached maturity. “The GIFF has some great surprises in store for festival-goers, both in terms of the quality of the films and international series and the digital creation.”
