In the summer of 2024, Andrea Arnold visited the Owl Sanctuary, a raptor den nestled in Suffolk in eastern England. This birthday gift made her jump with envy, as it was so timely between the presentation in Cannes, in May 2024, of her sixth feature film, Birdand its theatrical release, at the start of 2025. She spoke to us about it on the Croisette, where we met her for the first time; she spoke to us about it again at the end of November 2024, in a Parisian hotel. Alas, neither owl nor owl: in Suffolk, the Briton saw nothing. White cabbage. « Oh yesshe corrects herself, I saw rats and a barking deer! That was enough for my happiness. On this land, we cannot guarantee anything, especially the presence of owls. »

Over time, Andrea Arnold has made a specialty of taming the unexpected events that mark her journey, since her birth 63 years ago, on the borders of the countryside and the great outskirts of London. Her pedigree hardly destined her for the cinema: raised with her three brothers and sisters by a single mother, surviving between odd jobs and big worries, she only saw, until she came of age, two films, Mary Poppins et Psychosis. “I remember very well the empty bungalow, with the windows wide open to the darkness, where I discovered Psychosis, at my aunt’s house. This is how my brain works: from strong images, which haunt me. »
