The fallen actor, dismissed by Hollywood after accusations of sexual violence, assures that his return is imminent.
American actor Armie Harmer, who became persona non grata in Hollywood in 2021 after accusations of sexual violence, comes out of silence. In a long interview given to the podcast Your Mom’s Housethe star of Call Me By Your Name looks back on the scandal that cost him his career, and claims to be preparing his return to the cinema.
“The tide is turning, it takes time,” declares the 38-year-old actor.
Armie Hammer fell from grace when private messages of a sexual nature attributed to him were revealed on social networks in early 2021. These extramarital exchanges (he was then married to American presenter Elizabeth Chambers) reported fantasies involving drinking blood and mutilation, which led to him being called a cannibal by Internet users, as reported by Variety.
The affair took a turn when an alleged former partner testified in the American press to accuse him of having imposed violent sexual relations on her. In March of that year, another accused him of raping and beating her four years earlier. An investigation was launched by the Los Angeles police but did not result in any charges. Armie Hammer, who maintains that all reports were consensual, had been dropped from several projects, his contract with his agency had been terminated and he had stayed out of the spotlight ever since.
“I subconsciously wanted to get caught”
“Today, when my name is mentioned by people in the industry in conversations, it’s to say: ‘This guy really got screwed,’” he says. “It’s a very nice feeling. It’s very encouraging.”
He continues by declaring that he “refuses roles”, as the requests would flood in. “The first job offer I turned down, after four years in this s**t, it was the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life.”
About exposing intimate details of his life, he says: “I think somewhere, deep down, I subconsciously wanted to get caught. I didn’t see myself in the public image (of my wife and I): ‘Look at them, they’re the Ralph Lauren family. They have the perfect life, the perfect house, the perfect kids.’
Armie Hammer has just finished filming a western, Frontier Crucible. He says he has two new shoots planned this year.
