Meghan Markle made its long-awaited return to Instagram on January 1st. His first post is a video shot by the prince Harry on a beach near their home in Montecito, California. Dressed in white, the Duchess of Sussex appears running along the beach, where she crouches to trace “2025” in the sand with a finger. She then walks away laughing.

Some 400,000 profiles (including those of celebrities such as Zoe Saldana, Serena Williams et Kris Jenner) are currently following Meghan Markle, who has disabled comments for now. In her black and white profile photo, she wears a white dress, a choker necklace and her hair down. She displays a bright smile. Her account is simply titled Meghan, accompanied by a brief, more formal biography: Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

The Duchess of Sussex first spoke about her desire to return to Instagram three years ago. “Want to know a secret? I’m coming back… on Instagram,” she revealed to the magazine The Cut.

In the period before her engagement to Prince Harry, the former actress was already a very popular figure on the Internet as the author of the lifestyle blog The Tig. In those same years, she also had an Instagram profile where three million users followed her posts on yoga, cooking and her escapades with her friends or her dog Guy. She had to close her account before her marriage.

From a common Instagram account to a solo profile

When she joined the British royal family, she joined the Instagram account shared by Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton as members of Kensington Palace. According to her, she had no control over the posts, not even those about her children.

Shortly before the birth of their son Archie in 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex created their own Instagram account, @sussexroyal. Harry and Meghan used it to share their own snaps. When they decided to leave the British royal family a few months later, they lost the right to use the term “royal”. They therefore decided to close their account and say goodbye to social media indefinitely. Since then, they have spoken about the racist and misogynistic harassment that Meghan Markle suffered on social networks when she became engaged to Prince Harry. The couple is now committed to the fight against cyber-harassment and the protection of children on the Internet.
