The charming Marmottan Monet museum, nestled in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its opening on June 21, 1934. The opportunity to organize a unique exhibition dedicated to trompe l’oeil, a very codified genre in the history of art which consists of creating the illusion of reality in painting or sculpture.
The spectator no longer distinguishes the living from the inanimate
Most often, a still life executed in real size, without frame or signature. The heterogeneous and stimulating itinerary therefore presents more than 90 works of undeniable technical virtuosity, which play with the public’s perception and return them to their own credulity. Thus, we are challenged by the hyperrealistic statue of Daniel Firman which represents a young woman in a striped sweater, jeans and sneakers, her face facing the wall, Jade (2015). created using resin, steel, clothing and a wig, it establishes the French visual artist as the worthy heir of the American Duane Hanson. Enough to disturb, jostle and surprise the visitor, who no longer distinguishes the living from the inanimate.
