Who says end of year, says top films and series. AlloCiné spectators gave their verdict thanks to their ratings and named the best Netflix film of the year 2024.
The favorite Netflix film of AlloCiné viewers this year is also one of the biggest hits for the platform in 2024. Critics and audiences were almost unanimous on this breathtaking Spanish-American historical drama.
Rated 4.2 out of 5 by AlloCiné spectators, The Snow Circle by Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) stands out as THE Netflix film of the year thanks to its moving true story, its immersive side and its prodigious staging.
A mind-blowing true story
The Snow Circle takes on the incredible true story of the survivors of the infamous plane crash in the Andes in 1972. It is inspired by the events linked to Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya Flight 571 and the book The snow society by Pablo Vierci, born in 2009.
The young Uruguayan rugby team victim of this accident had to survive for more than two months in extreme conditions and had to indulge in cannibalistic practices to hold on.
Despite this exceptional and morally questionable scenario, the 16 survivors out of the 45 passengers who were rescued were not judged or condemned for this radical survival method for a very specific reason, which you can read in this article.
An immersive and technically unstoppable film
If the true story at the heart of the Circle of Snows is already quite gripping, the director wanted to make us experience it from the inside in his film, impressive in its realism and intensity, thanks to his know-how, his concern for detail and its shots in real settings.

And this requires production under high tension: 140 days of filming and 7 months of preparation. The young actors had to prepare their bodies to be able to film in difficult climatic conditions, such as climbing to 4,000 meters of altitude in the Sierra Nevada ski resort.
To extend the experience of the film, Netflix has shared a very complete making-of in which we can discover the phenomenal process of making the Snow Circle.
A phenomenal success for the platform
The Circle of Snows is quite simply the third most viewed Netflix film this year, but it is above all the third most viewed non-English language film in the entire history of the platform with almost 100 million views recorded by the streaming service .
Praised by critics, this historical drama won twelve Goya awards (the Spanish equivalent of the Césars) and garnered two Oscar nominations. The film won other awards and allowed its director to return to the forefront in triumph.
As for AlloCiné spectators, who gave a rating of 4.2 out of 5, the critics are rave and everyone agrees that they took “a huge slap” ! And we can only agree.
