Jonas Vingegaard on his fall at the Tour du Pays Basque: “I thought I was going to die of internal bleeding…”

Victim of a perforated lung, a fractured sternum, seven broken ribs as well as fractures to the collarbone and hand, Vingegaard remained prostrate on the ground for a long time in a corner which also sent Roglic, Evenepoel and Cras into the decor.

“That day (Editor’s note: April 4)I really thought it was over, continues the runner from Visma | Lease a Bike. I thought I was going to die from internal bleeding. I cried a lot in the hospital, I couldn’t stop thinking about my daughter Frida and my wife Trine. I told myself that they were going to have to live without me while our family was to grow a few months later with the arrival of a second child… I couldn’t stand this idea. When I was lying in the ravine, I remember thinking that if I could survive this, then I would end my career.”

Jonas Vingegaard already has the 2025 Tour de in mind: “When we prepare a plan, we have to think about Remco”

A little more than three months after this tragedy, the Dane took second place on the final podium of the Tour de France, between Tadej Pogacar (1st) and Remco Evenepoel (3rd).
