    • Brian Mulroney (né en 1939)

      This former Prime Minister of Canada died on February 29 following a fall. At the head of government from 1984 to 1993, he was the last prime minister elected under the banner of the Progressive Conservative Party. He was notably one of the main architects of free trade in North America.

      This host and actor died on March 2 due to complications related to brain surgery. A great sports enthusiast with seemingly inexhaustible knowledge, he charmed several generations of Quebecers during a prolific career where humor was often put at the service of pedagogy.

    • Jean-Pierre Ferland (born in 1934)

      Jean-Pierre Ferland

      This singer-songwriter died of natural causes on April 27. He became known for his romantic songs, but also for the musical revolution that his album sparked Jaunepublished in 1970, showing that Quebec music could be innovative and daring.

    • Réginald Charles Gagnon, known as Cayouche (born in 1949)

      This singer-songwriter died of cancer on May 29. The “old hippie” with an atypical background (he was notably an American soldier and a wanderer) enjoyed popular success in the 1990s and early 2000s thanks to his country music, which made him one of the emblematic artists of the Acadian culture.

    • Alice Munro (born 1931)

      This Ontario-born author died on May 13 of natural causes. A short story expert, in 2013 she became the only Canadian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Over the decades, it has established itself as a monument of Canadian literature.

    • Érik Canuel (born 1961)

      This director and screenwriter died on June 15 of a devastating cancer. His flagship works, starting with the series Fortier and the movie Good Cop, Bad Cophave made it a must-see on both the small and big screens in Quebec.

    • Donald Sutherland (né en 1935)

      This actor from New Brunswick died on June 20 from the consequences of chronic lung disease. His successful Hollywood career, launched in 1967 with the film The twelve bastards and propelled by several other Oscar-winning productions, lasted more than five decades and earned him an honorary Oscar in 2017.

    • Madeleine Arbor (born 1923)

      This design pioneer died of natural causes on December 10. By reinventing the windows of large stores or the decor of passenger trains, she has given credentials to an art which until then was not perceived as such. She also co-signed the manifesto Overall refusalin 1948, playing a key role in the democratization of art in Quebec.
