The PS5 is of course still up to date, but Sony is already thinking about the future by ensuring it has the best partners. It is with this in mind that at the end of the year the most tech-savvy PlayStation fans were happy to learn that the company is currently working on a secret project with one of the major players in hardware manufacturing.
Mix PlayStation blue and AMD red and you get the purple of their joint project called Amethyst. The collaboration is now official: AMD won the contract with Sony, to the detriment of Intel which failed in the tender competition (source: Reuters). And fun fact, Intel has not participated in any production of modern consoles, neither for the Xbox Series (which have AMD processors), nor for the Switch (nVIDIA processor). The partnership with PlayStation should also extend over several years.

Intel lagging behind
Mark Cerny, PlayStation designer, does not explicitly say this in his technical seminar but it seems very likely that the project will benefit the next machine, the PS6. The processor planned by AMD and PlayStation is based on a unified uDNA architecture which makes it possible to combine gaming performance with the use of machine learning. The goal, according to Cerny, is to “democratize” this technology while offering better graphics. This involves in particular Ray-Tracing (for better realism of landscapes and light effects, already used by the PS5 Pro), the use of PSSR and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), neural networks allowing improve graphic rendering.
Nintendo can blush
By creating such enthusiasm for ongoing research and development, PlayStation seems to be taking the lead over its competitors. On the Nintendo side, nothing has been made official regarding the components, the only elements known to date come from leaks and mainly concern the visuals of the machine. A solid source recently expressed that the public should expect an announcement from the company to the Big N very soon, in January!
That said, there is no doubt that Nintendo will be the first to announce its next console, since its president, Shuntaro Furukawa, declared via X that the console will be made official before March 2025. Like PlayStation, Sony’s financial director, Hiroki Totoki, admitted at the beginning of last February that the PS5 was entering the second half of its life. Let’s do the calculations: knowing that it came out in 2020 and that this speech took place in 2024, we can hope for a potential PS6 for 2027-2028.
