“As long as there is ignorance and poverty on earth, books of this nature may not be useless.” In his famous preface, Victor Hugo already predicted a long life for his Misérables and he was not wrong: a century and a half later, the world is still cruel and his work is one of the most legendary in French literature. And the most suitable too.
While a new version of the musical has just made a stopover in Switzerland, on the screens, we still remember the 2012 film, which saw Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe singing the song… for the better and for the worst. Despite its Oscars, the film will horrify many of Hugo’s admirers. Among them, Andrew Davies, Welsh screenwriter to whom we owe the adaptation ofPride and prejudice (1995), from Reason and feelings (2008) or Doctor Zhivago (2002). And who has made it his mission to “save this great book”.
