After the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton answered the question of a possible sequel to his masterpiece Edward Scissorhandswith Johnny Depp.
A true emo-gothic icon of fantastic cinema, Tim Burton experienced a journey through the artistic desert from Planet of the Apes in 2001, with widely divisive films like The Funeral Wedding, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland, Big Eyes, Miss Peregrine and the Peculiar Children, or the huge failure Dumbo.
Despite this, the filmmaker regularly gives small, tiny signs of life. Some will cite Big Fishothers Frankenweenie. More recently, there was the series Wednesday on Netflix (of which he is a producer, in addition to having directed the first four episodes) and Beetlejuice 2. And the success of this sequel probably made Hollywood want to imagine that of another of his major works: Edward Scissorhands.
This modern tale, half Pinocchio, half Frankenstein, carried by Johnny Depp at the dawn of his glory, marked the beginning of the collaboration between the two men. A cooperation which resulted in the creation of seven films, the latest of which is Dark Shadows (2012). But one question remains unanswered: is Edward’s return possible?
EDWARD Scissorhands 2 OR NOT?
After the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (more than 451 million at the box office, for a budget of barely 100 million), Tim Burton could certainly recycle his classics. Asked by IndieWire in November 2024 regarding the possibility of a sequel for Edward Scissorhandsdirector Tim Burton was however very firm, and dispelled any speculation.
For him, this film belongs to a particular era and is sufficient in itself, it is therefore not worth hoping to one day see a Edward 2 :
“There are films that I don’t want to make a sequel to. I didn’t want to make a sequel to this film because it seemed unique to me. I didn’t want to make a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas because I felt like it was a one-off movie. Some things are best left aside, and for me that’s the case for [Edward aux Mains d’Argent]. »
Although Tim Burton rules out a sequel, However, he did not close the door to a new cooperation with Johnny Depp. He even says he will work with him again. But for that, Burton would have to imagine a film that would require the presence of the actor:
“I’m sure there will be one [collaboration avec Johnny Depp]. I never know if I’m going to work with this or that actor. In general, it has to be based on the project I’m working on. That’s cinema. It’s about collaborating and bouncing ideas off the people around you. »
For now, Tim Burton is preparing the broadcast of season 2 of Wednesdayof which he directed four more episodes. It should arrive on Netflix in 2025. As for Johnny Depp, he will be appearing in The Carnival at the End of Days by Terry Gilliam in 2026, where he will face Jeff Bridges who will play the role of God.
