Wrapped up in his little red coat, Toffee the Yorkshire Terrier finds his nose attracted by the smells of cinnamon and mulled wine. His owner, Maria Teresa from Luxembourg, holds him in her arms while she walks the aisles of the “Bazar”, the traditional Christmas market organized every year by the Luxembourg Red Cross of which she is president. As always, it is with undisguised joy that the Grand Duchess comes to meet the 350 volunteers present on the site and the clients.
Accompanied by her daughter-in-law Stéphanie, the hereditary grand duchess, the wife of Henri de Luxembourg toured the site with interest. The two women, warmly dressed, in red for Stéphanie and in beige for Maria Teresa, do not miss a beat of the objects, delicacies and other activities exhibited under the ephemeral marquee of the Glacis in Limpertsberg. The hereditary grand duchess even seems to have fallen for a few pairs of socks, surely intended for her two boys, Charles de Luxembourg, 4 years old, and his little brother, François. Beyond crafts and second-hand clothing, the bazaar serves to inform Luxembourgers about the activities of the Red Cross, such as with first aid training offered to all.
This 78th edition, like all the others, will see its profits benefit suffering children in Luxembourg and around the world, and be used for projects supporting disadvantaged families. Last year, 290,000 euros were raised. “We realize, by supporting young people every day, that more and more of them are going through difficult periods at a psychological level, but also materially. The unfavorable economic context really has a direct impact on their well-being” , confides Anne Reuland, president of the Luxembourg-city section of the Red Cross to the newspaper Daily. “Yes, even in Luxembourg, there are families who lack many things, we must not forget that,” she recalls. The presence of the Grand Duchess and the Hereditary Grand Duchess does not fail to attract attention to these two charitable days every year. A nice outing for two to start the month of Christmas under the sign of solidarity.
