Adapted from the bookE.T.A. Hoffmann, wonderful evocation of fairy tales and parable of the passage from childhood to adulthoodthe ballet in two acts, “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky has continued to delight young and old since its creation in 1892 at the Marie Theater in Saint Petersburg.
A fairy tale
Clara receives a nutcracker as a Christmas gift. Soon, in a universe as strange as it is enchanted, the toys come to life. As snowflakes and dancers swirl to the sound of Tchaikovsky’s sparkling music, the nutcracker transforms into prince charming, and takes Clara into his marvelous kingdomthe kingdom of sweets where the Sugar Plum Fairy organizes big parties to receive the young girl amazed by the dances which follow one another in a magical and grandiose whirlwind.
Celesta
For “The Nutcracker”, Tchaïkovski innovates and introduces into his score the Celesta (hybrid instrument between the glockenspiel and the piano invented in 1886) which responds to the symphony orchestra by bringing a touch of celestial magic and mystery. In the heart of sumptuous settings and in virtuoso choreography by Kaloyan Boyadjiev (winner of the Grand Prix de Biarritz in 2022), Clara’s enchanted world comes to life in this elegant ballet which symbolizes the difficult transition from childhood to adulthood.
