Gregory Porter, American vocal jazz legend, performs for the first time on the stages of the Mawazine Festival – Rythmes du Monde. A former American football player, he has successfully transposed his passion for gospel, soul, and jazz into a musical career rich in emotions and powerful messages.

A few moments before going on stage, Gregory Porter spoke to Hespress FR. For the Sacramento native, art is much more than an expression of the soul, it is a means of healing, “Music, this transcendent force that heals souls and nourishes spirits, has always been at the heart of my journey. I still remember the days when I simply dreamed of a musical career, unaware of the true scope of this art”.

Recalling his childhood, Gregory tells us that with “Over time, through my travels around the world and shared stories, I discovered that music can transcend linguistic and cultural boundaries. It is a universal language of understanding and connection. It allows us to express the full range of human emotions, from ineffable joys to the deepest sorrows”.

These themes resonate particularly with me. Music is not only a gentle escape for happy moments, but also a comfort in the face of difficulties, he says.I have seen suffering children smile through a melody, torn communities coming together around a song. It is this ability to uplift and heal that motivates me every day”, confides the American singer.

Speaking about his injury that led him to switch from sport to music, Gregory Porter emphasizes that his personal challenges played a crucial role in his journey. “ The loss of my mother and the COVID-19 tragedy that took my beloved brother from me have been heartbreaking. However, from these trials a new strength was born, a strengthened belief in love and the transformative power of music. Writing songs of optimism during the pandemic was not only an artistic duty, but also a beacon of hope for myself and for those who listened” he adds.

Asked about his famous balaclava, Gregory Porter says: “ Before devoting myself to music, I was passionate about cooking. As a chef, I found a similar satisfaction to what I get today from sharing my music. It’s the same feeling of creation and personal expression that has driven me from the beginning. This hat, offered by my brother, symbolizes this transition, from cooking to stage, from passion to vocation« .

Today, I couldn’t be more grateful for the unwavering support you have given me. Together, let’s continue to spread the magic of music, celebrate human resilience and inspire future generations to believe in a world where every note, every melody can change a life”, promises the singer, before delivering an unforgettable performance.
