Newly arrived in France, the Max platform is already bringing out the big guns: season 2 of House of the Dragon, which will be available from Monday June 17 in France, takes us back to the world of Game Of Thrones with its dragons and its power struggles. Who is the true heir of Viserys, a king who died without established succession? His first son, Aegon, placed on the throne by his widow Alicent? Or his eldest daughter, Rhaenyra, whom he had supported during his lifetime?

The two camps oppose each other in a distant battle, where attempts at alliance and corridor agreements take precedence over the big spectacle. A struggle for influence, where the manipulators of the shadows have plenty of room to express themselves.

Nuclear analogy

Coming back to what Game Of Thrones did better, House of the Dragon sees itself as a medieval political series focused on diplomacy and less on epic confrontation in the open countryside. The fiery madness promised by the end of season 1 actually gives birth to a cold war, where each party even advocates de-escalation!

Played mainly in royal councils or in fortress alcoves, this season 2 uses dragons as a weapon of massive deterrence that no side dares to use, for fear of tipping the seven kingdoms into an apocalypse without winner.

An astonishing nuclear analogy assumed in the first episodes, which also justifies a certain, slightly frustrating inaction. Talkative and austere in form, the new episodes follow the negotiations, sometimes in a certain confusion, by dint of multiplying the references to the Houses which make up Westeros.

But she still knows how to breathe fire if necessary. And shock the viewer with unbearable sharp scenes, properly continuing the legend of Game Of Thrones.
