Fort Boyard celebrates its 35th anniversary on television

In 2024, France 2 is preparing to celebrate 35 years of the game on the air every Saturday evening. Entitled “Forbidden Cells”, the show will offer each week a cell with notably new characters, but also the return of personalities who contributed to the history of the game, like the host Patrice Laffont or the ex -host: Anne-Gaëlle Riccio.
The teams of candidates made up of sportsman, television personality, Youtuber, singer will once again have to bend over backwards to foil the traps of Father-Fouras, ready to do anything to protect his treasure.

For the return of the show, tests will be completely revisited like Excalibur which will become the Viking test. You will have to release a sword and break a huge block of ice which locks the coveted key in its heart.

Mythical characters

When we talk about Fort Boyard, we think of Father Fouras, but the guardian of the temple is not the only one who joins the Charentais monument every year. Passe-Partout and Passe-Muraille will make their return this year with a particularity, they will be able to speak to the candidates and even help them once per show. Note that for this new season, chef Willy Rovelli will return to the kitchen of his restaurant with more presentable cuisine…
Cyril Féraud will return to the costume of his character Cyril Gossbo to ask questions to the various candidates who cross his path. Delphine Wespiser who plays the characters of White and Red will play a 3rd character, blue.

Finally, always with the aim of slowing down the candidates in their quests for the Boyars: the Boo family will be back with the presence of Lady Boo, Big Boo but also the new recruit Booster.

I’m always very happy to be there. Beyond the show itself and its concept, there is also the team I work with” (Olivier Minne)

Having hosted for 22 seasons, Olivier Minne will be back to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the program from June 29 at 9:10 p.m. on France 2 with still the same desire. For this first meeting: the team will be made up of Elie Semoun, Damien Pauwels, Jimmy Mohamed, Léa François, Guillaume Daret, Aurélie Konaté and Nina Métayer from Rochelais, elected best pastry chef in the world.

The crazy story of a building like no other

Located between the island of Aix and the island of Oléron, Fort Boyard is one of the best-known French monuments in the world. To protect and guard the mouth of the Charente, and in particular the Rochefort Arsenal, from the English invasion. And while the cannons installed on the islands of Aix and Oléron did not have sufficient range, it was decided to build a building on a tiny sandbank called “Boyard”

In 1801, the decision to build the fort was made. The first materials are transported to the sandbank. Unfortunately, given the harsh winters and catastrophic weather, construction continues to be postponed. It was not until 1866, under Napoleon III, that the building was completed. With a length of 68 meters and a width of 31 meters, Fort Boyard rises up to 29 meters above ocean level.

To protect the building from waves, a breakwater was built in a spur towards the sea and a docking harbor towards the south. Nearly seven years of work are necessary to carry out this new enterprise.

At the end of the work, and while the technological evolution of the cannons now allows them to have a longer range, the Fort is no longer essential. For several months, the building will receive around ten men in charge of ensuring maintenance.

In 1871, after several weeks of insurrection, the commune of Paris was crushed. War councils will hand down more than 10,000 convictions, mainly in New Caledonia. Before being able to transfer all the prisoners, the condemned are imprisoned in Brittany, but also in Charente-Maritime, on Fort Boyard.

In just a few months, nearly 900 prisoners will spend a few days at Fort Charentais. It was not until the beginning of 1873 that the fort was emptied of its prisoners.

In 1914, while the First World War was raging, plans were being made to imprison captured German soldiers, but this idea was quickly abandoned. At the end of the First World War, the fort was abandoned.

In 1962, a dentist bought the fortress for 33,000 francs, or approximately €7,400. It was put up for sale again in 1979 with ever-increasing damage.

In 1980, Jacques Antoine, game creator and director, selected the monument to make a game there: the treasure hunt. At the same time, the Charente-Maritime department became the owner of the building and it was in 1990 that Jacques Antoine launched his game: Fort Boyard.
