What are the symptoms of pyelonephritis?
According to Ameli.fr, after a frequent but often discreet episode of urinary infection or cystitis (urinary burning, frequent urge to urinate, etc.), the symptoms of kidney infection appear suddenly:
– a fever above 38.5°C, chills, general malaise;
– pain in the lumbar region (lumbar fossa) and/or abdominal area, generally on one side. They can be spontaneous, or appear during palpation by the doctor. They can radiate under the ribs or go down towards the pubis;
– digestive disorders with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating.
In the event of symptoms suggesting acute pyelonephritis, you should consult a doctor without delay in the day, advises Health Insurance.
The diagnosis of kidney infection is confirmed by cytobacteriological examination of urine. A blood test, a kidney ultrasound, and a uroscan are also useful in certain cases to confirm the diagnosis.
Pyelonephritis is treated with antibiotic tablets, targeted according to the germ found in the urine. If pyelonephritis is not treated in time, it can develop into generalized infection (sepsis) or renal or perirenal abscess.
Hospitalization is necessary in severe forms, in cases of risk (elderly diabetics for example), of unfavorable development despite treatment after 48 to 72 hours, or in the event of an obstacle to be removed surgically.
Indeed, surgery may be necessary if it is due to the presence of a kidney stone which is blocking the passage of urine. Doctors then speak of obstructive pyelonephritis. This can be very serious and requires emergency urine drainage, because the retention of purulent urine risks destroying the kidney and causing septicemia, in other words a generalized infection which can be fatal.
