On the occasion of International Day, the French channel takes stock of a disease that is too silent.

The numbers are constantly increasing. In Belgium, the latest data from INAMI states that 8% of the population has diabetes. Slightly distorted data since it is estimated that 30% of patients are not diagnosed. Particularly because diabetes is a silent disease and is often discovered accidentally.

A disaster in itself: if left untreated, diabetes can lead to long-term complications: eye damage, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. Early diagnosis is essential, and today many prevention campaigns are flourishing here and there. For example, the City of Mouscron offers completely free screening days throughout the month of November.

On the occasion of International Diabetes Day – created in response to concerns linked to the increasing incidence of the disease in the world – Marina Carrère d’Encausse takes stock through a documentary followed by a debate, surrounded by specialists.

We (re)discover the two types of diabetes and the various reasons pushing the disease to develop, with obviously our lifestyles being singled out. But the whole appeal of this documentary lies in the solutions for living with the disease. The most accessible remains physical activity: it increases the effectiveness of insulin by improving the sensitivity of body tissues. Moving has never been more essential.

But we will also take stock of this miracle injection, Ozempic. A semaglutide that mimics a hormone naturally produced by the body and helps control blood sugar levels. A drug overtaken by its popularity: it is misused by overweight people wanting to lose weight. The consequence is terrible for diabetics: Ozempic is often out of stock.
