Shrek’s donkey is getting his own movie, yihaah!

With his punchlines that cut the whistle of an improv match champion, he is undoubtedly the funniest of all the characters in “Shrek”. To the point of sometimes eclipsing – often, even – the green ogre who nevertheless plays the title role of the saga. Suffice to say that the following information is therefore something to rejoice: the Donkey is going to have his own film.

It was Eddie Murphy who spilled the beans during an interview for the release of “Beverly Hills Cop 4”, which he is currently promoting. Asked about “Shrek”, the American actor, who has voiced Donkey – Jo, his little name – since the very first opus in 2001, confirmed that he was in the process of recording the dialogues for the 5th part of the saga.

According to the actor, “Shrek 5” will be released on screens in 2025. Better: as soon as production on this new opus is finished, Eddie Murphy will tackle a new film derived from the same universe, but dedicated to the indescribable sidekick of the green ogre. “The Donkey will have his own film, we’re going to do that too,” he revealed to the cinema magazine Collider.

If in the original version, Eddie Murphy will once again dub Donkey, the latter will no longer have the same voice in the French version. The reason: actor Med Hondo, voice actor for Eddie Murphy and therefore Donkey in all previous “Shrek”, died in 2019.

Donkey is not the first secondary character in the saga to have his own film. Before him, Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas in the original version) became the hero of two feature films in his name, released in 2011 and 2022.
