While they represent two sacred monsters of their respective arts, Final Fantasy and Star Wars share more things than one might imagine at first glance. And the best part is that their creators met, as evidenced by this legendary photo.

Lately, Final Fantasy fans have been particularly spoiled on all levels.. Whether with the release of Final Fantasy XVI in June 2023, that of Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis in September, then Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in February 2023 and finally Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail last July, there were what to do and on all media.

A meeting of legends

But after all these outings, the news of the saga is much calmer and nothing has yet been announced for next year. For his part, the creator of Final Fantasy, who no longer works at Square Enix, develops games on his own like Fantasian and takes advantage of his time to play FFXIV and publish things on X (formerly Twitter). And recently, the latter released a legendary photo: his meeting with the creator of Star Wars! Without any context beforehand, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, published on Twitter a photo of him and Yoshinori Kitase, director of many cult FFs and current strongman of the license, alongside George Lucas, creator of Star Wars. And clearly, it is not the laconic message that accompanies it that will allow us to know more:

This is what I was looking for in the warehouse.
When I couldn’t find it, I asked Kitase to send me a scan of the film.

Final Fantasy and Star Wars, more linked than we imagine?

If this meeting may seem improbable at first glance, it makes sense once you know a little about the saga. Obviously, most players know that Final Fantasy is full of Star Wars references and the developers don’t hide it. If we want to start from the most obvious, we can think of the characters of Biggs and Wedge that we find in all the episodes of the saga and which are the name of Luke Skywalker’s companions in the first Star Wars, when he joins the X-Wing squadron which will destroy the Death Star.

Beyond that, we can think of certain episodes like Final Fantasy IV where the antagonist Golbez clearly recalls Darth Vador or even Final Fantasy XII where the story seems almost copied from Episode IV. In the most unlikely, we remember that Yoshinori Kitase declared that the pod race in Episode I inspired the Blitzball mini-game in Final Fantasy on which he served as director… as strange as that may seem! In any case, this meeting had more meaning than we imagine and we wonder what they could have talked about.
