Very sad news. Reggaeton star Don Omar announced on his social media Monday June 17 that he was battling cancer, posting a photo of his wrist surrounded by what appears to be a hospital bracelet.

“Today yes, but tomorrow I won’t have cancer. Good intentions are welcome. See you soon,” he wrote, full of optimism, in this publication shared on his Instagram account. The 46-year-old singer, considered by many fans and experts as “the king of reggaeton”, did not give further details on the type of cancer he has, nor on the treatment he is receiving.

After beginning his musical career in the 1990s, he greatly contributed to popularizing reggaeton beyond the borders of Latin America by releasing his first album, entitled “The Last Don”, in 2003. This includes titles which have become true references of reggaeton such as “Dale don dale”, “Dile” or even “Pobre Diabla”, helping to propel him to the rank of superstar.

Actor in Fast & Furious

A few years later, in 2010, he collaborated with the Portuguese singer Lucenzo with whom he released the world-famous single “Danza Kuduro”, which became one of the most emblematic titles of his career. In total, he has been nominated for one Grammy Award, 13 times for the Latin Grammy Awards and won two, according to The Latin Reporting Academy.

The artist who collaborated with Jennifer Lopez in 2005 on the hit “Hold You Down” also embraced an acting career, appearing in several films in the successful “Fast & Furious” saga, in which he played the role of Rico Santos.

On the musical level, William Omar Landrón Rivera, his real name, made his big comeback in 2023 with the release of his album “Forever King”, before announcing a tour entitled “Back to Reggaeton” including the first stop in the United States. United and Canada was completed last April, and the second stage of which is due to begin in August.
