This September saw the release of Previously Saved Version, an animated short film produced by the famous Canadian studio Rocket Science, based in Toronto. A film which combines technological innovation and captivating storytelling and which has quickly established itself as one of the landmark works of the end of the year in the field of animation. A success which is not unrelated to the contribution of two former students of the Montpellier school Objectif 3D: Rachad Meya from the class of 2011 who was CG Supervisor (responsible for the entire process of creating the digital elements of a work ), as well as Laurin Planes from the class of 2022, who played the role of Lighting Artist (placing the light sources in the 3D software to illuminate the settings and characters).
International collaboration and ambitious production
Rocket Science is known for its high-quality productions, and Previously Saved Version is no exception. This science fiction project explores complex themes such as memory, data control and the question of free will in a dystopian future. The story, immersing the viewer in an immersive virtual reality, is accompanied by breathtaking visuals, made possible thanks to exceptional technical mastery.
The film required months of preparation and intensive development. It involved an international team of talents from the four corners of the globe, among whom Rachad Meya and Laurin Planes stand out, both trained in Montpellier, at the Objectif 3D school, renowned for its high expertise in teaching trades in animated cinema and visual effects.
Rachad Meya, an impressive career as CG Supervisor
Rachad Meya, a 2011 graduate of Objectif 3D’s 3D class, plays the role of CG Supervisor on Previously Saved Version. With over ten years of experience in the animation and visual effects industry, Rachad rose through the ranks quickly, moving through various large-scale projects before joining Rocket Science.
In his role as CG Supervisor, he led the Lignthing department teams ensuring that every visual element of the film was consistent and technically perfect. His expertise was crucial in bringing to life the futuristic environments and realistic characters that populate the Previously Saved Version universe. Thanks to his know-how, the complex simulation scenes and special effects, which play a central role in the film’s plot, are remarkably fluid and credible.
Laurin Planes, a rising star as Lighting Artist
Laurin Planes, from Objectif 3D’s 2022 class, represents the new generation of talents who are shaping the industry. Recruited by Rocket Science shortly after graduation, he quickly joined the Previously Saved Version production team as a Lighting Artist.
His work was essential in creating the unique atmosphere of the film, playing with contrasts of light and shadow to reinforce the viewer’s immersion in this dystopian universe. As Lighting Artist, Laurin worked closely with other departments to ensure that the lighting of the scenes perfectly harmonized with the visual style of the film and contributed to the narrative. His skills also made it possible to optimize the renderings to guarantee a spectacular visual while respecting the technical constraints of the production.
A promising future
Previously Saved Version seems well on its way to garnering numerous distinctions at animation festivals around the world, both for its narrative innovation and for its visual prowess. The success of the film also opens new doors for its creators, and it is a safe bet that Rachad and Laurin will continue to be talked about in the years to come.
With this new achievement, Rocket Science once again affirms its place among the most prominent animation studios of the moment, while Objectif 3D confirms its reputation as one of the best talent pools in France and internationally.
A source of motivation for future students
For several years, Objectif 3D has trained professionals who are immediately operational in the animation and visual effects industry. The presence of Rachad Meya and Laurin Planes in a project of this scale testifies to the know-how and dynamism of the school.
This collaboration between two generations of former students on the same project also shows the cohesion and strength of the establishment’s network around the world. “The successes of Rachad and Laurin at Rocket Science are a source of pride for the establishment and a model for current and future students,” declares the teaching team.
