Why the date June 21?

Every year since 1982, we celebrate music on June 21, in around a hundred countries around the world. And, the origin of this world celebration is French! Sometimes called “World Music Day” the French name is often used in English-speaking countries. The event was thought up in 1976 by the American lutenist Joel Cohen, who worked for France Musique. He then proposed the creation of the “Saturnalia of music” during the two solstices: June 21 and December 21.

But we had to wait until 1981 to understand how this popular festival was part of the history of French culture. Indeed, after a survey carried out among French people, the finding established that five million people, half of them young people, play at least one musical instrument. It was then that Jack Lang, Minister of Culture, with Maurice Fleuret, director of music and dance at the Ministry of Culture and Christian Dupavillon, architect-scenographer, designed a large popular festival where all the amateur or professional musicians can make themselves known for an evening. And so the following year, on June 21, 1982, the first Music Festival was organized, free and open to all musicians and all French people.
