Saturday November 16, at 6:30 p.m., at the departmental cultural center, the Rodez Antonin-Artaud association is offering a screening of Marcel l’Herbier’s film “L’Argent” in which Antonin Artaud plays a major role. This screening will be accompanied by accordionist Lionel Suarez.
Three creators, three artists in their strictest definition: Antonin Artaud, Marcel l’Herbier and Lionel Suarez. Their common point: being all three brought together by the Rodez-Antonin-Artaud association for the screening of the film “L’Argent”, Saturday November 16 at 6:30 p.m., at the departmental cultural center and to close the year dedicated to Artaud and the 7th art.
Adapted from the eponymous novel by Émile Zola, the film changed by Marcel l’Herbier was screened for the first time in 1928. At the time, the feature film, lasting 2 hours 30 minutes, was ahead of its time. Antonin Artaud plays the role of the banker’s secretary. “We have the impression that he is the one pulling the strings, he makes several appearances in this film which remains exceptional in every way.”underlines Mireille Larrouy, president of the association. But this projection will also be exceptional due to the presence of accordionist Lionel Suarez. It will accompany, with music, the first part of the film, interspersed with a break. “There will undoubtedly be some improvisation, but Lionel has worked for a long time to come up with something that will bring out all the intensity of this film”she continues.
This screening is also an opportunity to return to the cinematographic work of Antonin Artaud. “It was rich, diverse. We find him in around thirty roles including the famous Napoleon by Abel Gance. He had a disturbing, captivating look. But he remained very demanding. He also wrote a few screenplays but which were very little played.”
The work of Antonin Artaud still resonates today, well beyond our borders. “He is still very well known and celebrated in many countriessays Mireille Larrouy. He was a versatile, transversal artist, who inspired numerous generations of directors and actors, who today claim his legacy.”
