Game of Thrones was a true cultural phenomenon to the point where many consider the series to be THE last large-scale unifying event, where now audiences can be further diluted between the different productions of the platforms. Between 2011 and 2019, David Benioff and DB Weiss's baby was on everyone's lips, whether we liked it or not, whether we saw it or not. In short, an inevitable show.
Since then, HBO and its owner, Warner Bros. Discovery, did not fail to continue investing in the universe of author George RR Martin with a spin-off ultimately canceled, then House of the Dragon which enjoyed undeniable success after two seasons and a third on the way. In 2025, another derivative series will see the light of day, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and there is no doubt that HBO is considering the continuation of the expansion.
Nevertheless, Game of Thrones could experience an unexpected adaptation since according to rumors in the corridor reported by The Hollywood ReporterWarner is currently seriously considering bringing it to the big screen. In parallel with the series, we could therefore soon see dragons, Targaryens, Starks or even White Walkers on the big screen.
Game of Thrones at the cinema, why now?
The studio did not want to comment on the news, but this is not surprising since the discussion on the subject is really in its infancy. The idea has been put on the table and now it's up to a few people to think about the who, when, how, why. So there is always a possibility that this film will never see the light of day.
However, that the subject is discussed internally is less surprising and Warner actually has everything to gain from betting on an extremely popular franchise for the big screen. It must be said that the studio did not have an easy year in 2024 with the failures, for example, of large machines like Furious or Joker: Folie à deux.
The worlds of Game of Thrones not only lend themselves very well to the big screen, but it is easy to imagine that a film based on them would be a great success, even more so if it is successful. Enough to regain color at the box office and allow Martin to procrastinate more, he who spends more time commenting on his adaptations than writing the rest of the main story at the moment.
