Cult rapper Snoop Dogg appears on television, in movies, and even in video games. This week, however, his Quebec audience will be able to see him in the flesh. Here are four things to know about his career in view of his performances in Quebec and Montreal.
A Dr. Dre product
A California native who took up rap in the 1990s, Snoop Dogg wasted no time before falling into the ear of famed producer Dr. Dre. After hearing one of his tapes, he invited him to collaborate on the film’s theme song Deep Cover (1992)which featured Laurence Fishburne, then on his album The Chronicle. Everything was in place for Snoop’s first solo project, Doggystyle, is all the rage. Since then, the MC has presented more than twenty projects which have collected gold and platinum certifications at a breakneck pace, in addition to winning top honors in several important galas, such as the Billboard Music Awards and the American Music Awards .
On-screen success
The film and television career of the interpreter Gin and Juice coincides with his successes in rap in the early 1990s. After standing out for his roles as a bandit in crime dramas like Training Day (2001), with Denzel Washington, and Baby Boy (2001), with Tyrese Gibson, he was able to make his place in animated cinema. We can notably hear his voice in the latest film of Garfield (2024), as well as in the first two chapters of The Addams Family (2019 and 2021). His name has been immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 2018 and this fall, he will act as a judge for the 26e television competition season The Voice.
A new name for each style
Throughout his career, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., his real name, has had a surprising number of nicknames. In 2012, Snoop Dogg became Snoop Lion, for a reggae album, and then became Snoopzilla, for a funk project with Dâm Funk. He also released an electronic music compilation under DJ Snoopadelic. Funny fact, Michael J. Corleone and Snoop Scorsese were also among his nicknames when producing two musical projects for adults with the magazine Hustler.
In video games
Snoop Dogg not only appears on screen as an actor and comedian, but as a video game character as well. In the last 20 years, he has lent his look and voice to more than fifteen games. So we can literally play with the rapper in sports games like Madden NFL 21 And NHL 20or in war games like those in the franchise Call of Dutynotably.
Snoop Dogg will be performing at the Videotron Center in Quebec on June 6, then at the Bell Center in Montreal on June 9.
