The famous residence, icon of the cult 1990 film and in which little Kevin is forgotten by his family who went on vacation, is once again on the market.

The house of the cult film “Mom I missed the plane !” is for sale. The house is at the center of the plot, in which Kevin, 8 years old, finds himself alone after being forgotten by his family who went on vacation and he is full of traps in the face of burglars who take advantage of the holidays to rob the neighborhood. This Georgian-style brick building, built in 1921 in Winnetka, in the northern suburbs of Chicago, is offered at $5,250,000 (4.8 million euros), reports NBC.

The iconic 848 m² mansion spans three floors and has five bedrooms and six bathrooms, according to the online listing. The photos, however, reveal a much less busy style than at the time of the cult Christmas film, released in 1990: the flowery tapestries have been replaced by white walls and decor with a (very) refined style. The house was renovated and enlarged in 2018, explains the real estate agency, ensuring that “the owners have taken care to maintain […] the integrity of the most memorable places”. Thus the vestibule and its grand staircase, largely immortalized in the film, are still clearly recognizable.

Rented on Airbnb in 2021

As for the rest of the house, it has been modernized to meet high-end standards – justifying the sale price. There is still a large family dining room, but also a kitchen with two central islands, a fireplace, a dressing room, two laundries, a spa, a gym, a private cinema room and even an indoor basketball court. .

“We drove for several weeks [dans les environs] until you find the right house” which would correspond to the gags and stunts imagined by the screenwriter John Hugues, told the director Chris Columbus in 2015 to Entertainment Weekly . “I remember taking pictures and sending them to John, who said, ‘It’s perfect, it’s exactly how I imagined it!”.”

The success of the film brought hundreds of curious people to the house every day. Its owners ended up selling it in 2012. According to the agency, it was then acquired for $1.6 million, before its renovation and expansion. In 2021, Airbnb offered to spend a night inside, on the occasion of the release of a remake “Mom I missed the plane ! (it starts again)”, with of course pizza and macaroni and cheese on the menu. Note to future owners: remember to check that all of young Kevin McCallister’s traps have been defused.
