Xavier Dolan: we know more about his new film, between horror and comedy

Invited to the Lumière Festival, Xavier Dolan revealed the first information on his next feature film. And the least we can say is that Quebecois is getting a makeover!

This Sunday, October 13 at the Lumière Festival, where he was invited for the tenth anniversary of the release of MommyXavier Dolan indulged in some confidences. During a masterclass, the director was able to answer several questions about his next film, which he describes as “an amalgamation of several genres” reports Variety. As such, Dolan reveals that he “was written with horrific aspects or moments” but also “lots of comic elements”. The project, for which the script has been completed, is still awaiting a shooting date.

As for the story, the director of Laurence Anyways announces that she will take her place “in 1895 in Parisian literary high society, but also in the countryside.” A period film therefore, which is reminiscent of the historical context ofLost Illusions by Xavier Giannoli, for which he was nominated for a César for best supporting role in 2023.

The rebirth of Xavier Dolan

An announcement as intriguing as it is unexpected, which seems to resonate like a rebirth for the 35-year-old filmmaker. “This will be the second chapter, the second half of a career that I have slowed down to the point of almost stopping.” he explains. Last year, the Quebec filmmaker provoked strong reactions by announcing, to everyone’s surprise, that he was going to retire from filmmaking. The failure of his series The Night Laurier Gaudreault Woke Up had plunged him into deep distress. Since then, Xavier Dolan has slowly but surely returned to cinema, notably through his role as President of the Un Certain Regard Jury at the last Film Festival.

The Lumière Festival takes place in Lyon from October 12 to 20.
