A French box office which remains very high internationally

The Last JaguarThe Last JaguarFrench cinema brings together 5 million spectators and generates €32.2 million in international theatrical revenue in March. Monthly attendance reached its second highest post-pandemic peak after that recorded in February, and even exceeded the level of March 2019! If he had ceded the crown to Last Jaguar after four consecutive months of reign, Anatomy of a fall comes back and seizes it again. More than 1 million foreign spectators discovered the Oscar-winning Palme d’Or this month, with a total of tickets sold in excess of 4.5 million and now aiming for 5 million! The drama caused a sensation in China where it attracted more than 400,000 moviegoers (China Film, €2.29 million in revenue) and even shined in the local top 5. We have not witnessed such a successful launch of a fiction production with majority financing and in French in China since Taxi 5 in 2018 (China Film, 1M admissions and €3.75M cumulative). Anatomy of a fall also continues his royal careers in Germany (Plaion, €498,000 and €5.09 million), Brazil (Diamond, €261,000 and €1.09 million), Australia (Madman, €139,000 and €1.36 million), in Japan (Gaga, 135,000 and 1.18 M€) or in Poland (M2, 215,000 and 1.07 M€ cumulative). If The Last Jaguar loses the monthly leadership, he nevertheless continues to unite his fans around the world. This month, nearly 30,000 Quebecers (VAT, €0.22 million) and 26,000 Czechs & Slovaks (Bonton, €0.18 million) discover it on the big screen, without forgetting nearly 300,000 Germans who allow it to cross the symbolic threshold of 1 million admissions across the Rhine (StudioCanal, €7.94 million) and that of 2 million outside ! The counters of Last Jaguar now total 421,000 tickets sold in Poland (Kino Swiat, €1.96 million), 253,000 in Italy (01 Distribution, €1.69 million) and 110,000 in Austria (Constantin, €0.96 million). The last step of the podium goes to Dog and catwith 316,000 admissions in Russia (Global, €0.91 million), which is ahead of another comedy, cock-a-doodle Doowhich delighted 194,000 Germans (Weltkino, €1.83 million) and 37,000 Austrians (Filmladen, €0.37 million). The Passion of Dodin Bouffant closes the top 5: the film has generated $2.64 million in box office revenue in the United States since its release at the beginning of February, which corresponds to 252,000 admissions (IFC), then debuted successfully in Vietnam (CJ HK/Lumix , 28,000 and 0.09 M€), in Norway (Another World, 10,000 and 0.12 M€) and in Singapore (Shaw, 2,000 and 0.02 M€). Traditionally much more changeable, the second half of the top 10 often welcomes new entrants, and the month of March is no exception. The New Woman attracted in particular 202,000 Germans (Neue Visionen, €1.77 million), while Vermin is exported to Latin America where it haunts 82,000 Mexicans (Gussi/Supra, €0.28 million) and 36,000 Colombians (Cine Colombia, €0.11 million), while Kina & Yuk: Foxes of the ice floes brings together 39,000 Italians (Adler, €0.26 million) and 26,000 Quebecers (Les Films Opale, €36,000 and €0.27 million combined), and The braid moves 60,000 German-speaking spectators (Capelight in Germany, Polyfilm in Austria and Praesens in Switzerland). Without forgetting the essential Jungle Aces 2 – World Tour Operation, chosen by 140,000 fans this month. These 10 titles account for 69% of admissions generated by French productions outside their borders in March 2024.

Germany, Mexico and China on the podium of the territories

VerminAs usual, Europe remains the leading geographical area for theatrical exhibition of French cinema (61% of monthly admissions). The western part contributes 2 million entries to the monthly total, while the central and eastern part (0.98 million) is closely followed by Latin America (0.94 million) which, in turn, is ahead of Asia (0.66 M). The aforementioned Anatomy of a fall (0.76M entries), Vermin (0.12M) and The Passion of Dodin Bouffant (0.12 M), to which is added the minority production My robot friend (0.57 M), are the most popular outside the Old Continent, and their scores explain the growth in non-European attendance of French productions. Germany (0.93M) remains at the top of the territory ranking, followed by Mexico (0.65M) and China (0.42M). 14 foreign territories (13 in February, 6 in January) offer more than 100,000 entries each to French productions in March 2024.

Drama still dominates, but comedy is back in force

Dog and catDog and catIn March, drama retained the title of favorite international genre (1.67 million spectators, 33% of the monthly total), and this thanks to the breakthroughs ofAnatomy of a fall and of The Passion of Dodin Bouffant. The warm welcome given to Dog and cat and to cock-a-doodle Doohas My robot friendhas The New Woman and to Vermin restores color to the respective genres – comedy, animation, biopic and fantasy –, offering them more spectators than in February. Productions that are predominantly French (81% of total admissions) and those in the French language (77%) still account for the largest share of the month’s admissions. To conclude, nearly 1.63 million admissions went to films labeled Arthouse (33% of the monthly total), with Anatomy of a fall And The Passion of Dodin Bouffant as leaders.

French films at international festivals in March 2024

Already passed through Toronto, San Sebastián and Marrakech, Building 5 continues his tour in Yokohama and New York, accompanied by his director Ladj Ly.
Awarded at the last Critics’ Week, and presented in São Paulo and Zurich, The Rapture wins the Prize for Best Emerging Director at the Unifrance New York Rendez-vous.
